Hey all! So I am a law student and am trying to focus my studies on polyamorous relationships but more importantly I am an activist at heart. I was wondering if there was anything that members of the poly community wanted...things like recognition? Support? Legal status? Rights? Etc.
There is no wrong answer! I am just curious to see if there are any/what causes that there are from this community!

Because (in the US at least), each state gets to have different laws regarding non-monogamy, it would be nice to see something even across the board that wouldn't make us out to be criminals in cases of consensual non-monogamy. Certain states, it's totally fine, some you're looking at a jail sentence and potential listing as a sex offender. But for me in IL, if I marry any partner, unless we register the house as a rental property and pay taxes that way, we can't have anyone (significant others or not) living there without risking criminal charges and fines upward of $300k. I'll have to find that legal listing, someone on tumblr posted it a while back and I threw it on my blog to keep as reference.
Beyond that, I'm not sure what kind of rights or legal status we could hope to achieve, I had an accountant in a poly relationship point out that group marriage for tax purposes would be a living nightmare, so despite his relationships, he had no desire to see multiple marriage ever come to pass. I don't know that I've developed an educated opinion either way on that topic because it hasn't been an issue for me yet.

Cool! I done my fair share of thinking about taxation and I would agree that allowing multiple marriages could become complicated for that purpose, but I personally have no expertise in that area.
Wow! I had never heard of a law like that! I would love a link to check it out. Thats against cohabitation? How odd.

Still looking for a link, but as soon I find it, I'll gladly toss it your way. Illinois is a delightfully corrupted state, our unofficial slogan is "Our governors make our license plates". There are dozens of laws that preside over things that are so outdated that they're only pulled out as excuses to tack onto tickets and charges. A lot of them, I really think were designed to be more "involuntary tax" fines than things to protect the people. (My personal favorite groan-worthy one is if you are without at least $1 cash on your person and you are stopped by the police, you can be detained and possibly arrested depending on the county.)
